Israel’s War on Gaza: Death Toll Surpasses 40,000

Shayna Godhin

The strife between Israel and Gaza has again gone to the worst, reaching a higher level of violence claiming so many lives. It is stated that the latest operation by Israel has led to the death of more than 40000 people making it one of the severe acts of aggression as of late.

The origin of animosity

Cleavages in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can easily be traced back to the early 20th century. The recent fight can be attributed to a string of incidents that led to the flare-up of previous hostilities wherein issues on territoriality, political influence, and control over religious grounds in Jerusalem were among those that contributed to the enhanced conflict level. These structural problems have evoked allergic hostility and caused outbreaks of aggression and intense fighting, including the current level of violent confrontation.

Gazan Emergency

Palestinian territory with a dense population of more than two million people, namely the Gaza Strip has been most affected by the Israeli operations. Airstrikes and ground operations continue without cease and have destroyed whole districts and killed or wounded thousands of civilian persons. Hospitals, schools, and power plants, and other critical structures have been extensively destroyed, which has worsened the humanitarian situation.

Some of the humanitarian organizations have said that inadequate provision of clean water, food, and medical supplies has compounded the problem. The general healthcare sector in the Gaza Strip is flattened and in such a situation can hardly absorb the numerous casualties. Most are even trapped under the rubble since key infrastructure such as roads and communication networks have been destroyed.

International response and appeal for cessation of the hostilities

The civilized world has expressed shock and condemnation at the civilian death rate that has been noticed. Many countries and the United Nations as well have appealed for an end to the fighting to avoid more deaths.

The Jewish State of Israel has defended its attack by arguing that it had to protect its citizens from rocket attacks that had been launched by Hamas – the group in control of Gaza.

Impact on Regional Stability

In its impact, the conflict has assumed significance for the overall Middle East area. It has also challenged Israel’s diplomacy with the rest of the Arab nations most of which support Palestine in the conflict. Moreover, aggressive actions have led to unprecedented protests all over the globe – people are willing to stop the killing and fight for Palestinians’ rights.

The war has also destabilized global markets including those in the energy sector. The Middle East is a region that is a key supplier of oil, therefore, any social unrest in the area could precipitate a negative economic repercussion at the global level.

Media Coverage and Misinformation

The media has especially focused on this conflict with reports of gruesome scenes and images going around in the news and social networks. But it has also exposed the risks that are inherent in receiving false information and propaganda. Fabrication of information has been indefatigable by the two sides to attract international support and thus observers are left in the dark.

Journalists working in the conflict area have perished or have been transformed into casualties while executing their journalism tasks. Nevertheless, the press is still very active, to some extent, in reporting the effects of war and making the culprits answer for it.

The Path Forward

Indeed the future of the conflict remains uncertain and the international community is sharply divided on the right approach to solving the question. While some Middle East commentators insist the only solution is a two-state solution others say diplomatic pressure (an arms embargo or sanctions) must be used to stop the killing.

The effect of the conflict on the civilians cannot be gainsaid since even children and the aged are being targeted. More than forty thousand people died because people forget that the conflict’s continuation takes lives. While major and middle powers and other actors engage with this intricate and indeed unpredictable conflict system, it is crucial to remind the world of the voiceless people of Gaza who are suffering from the war.
